Starting a monologue, simple, strong, is one of the most important parts of writing or performing it. The beginning sets the tone, explains the moment, and gives the audience a reason to listen. A good monologue does not start randomly. Instead, it opens with a line that responds to something happening in the setting. This helps the speaker, natural, believable, feel like a real person reacting to a real situation.

Begin With a Clear Reason to Speak

Every monologue needs a reason. The opening line, meaningful, direct, should connect to something that just happened; an action, a question, or a problem. This makes the character feel grounded. Without this connection, the character may seem like they are talking for no reason.

    Example:
    Instead of starting with:
    “I feel sad today.”
    A better opening might be:
“Ever since you walked out that door, everything has felt different.”

The second line responds to an event, connecting the monologue to the story.

    Show the Character’s Emotional State

The beginning should also reveal how the character feels. Their voice, honest, expressive, must give clues about their emotions; anger, fear, hope, confusion, or excitement. Showing emotion early helps the audience understand the purpose of the monologue.

    Give a Hint of Conflict

Conflict, central, important, helps the audience know what the monologue is about. A hint of conflict in the opening line makes listeners wonder what will happen next. This curiosity keeps them engaged.

    Keep It Natural

The beginning should sound natural. The language, simple, realistic, should match the character’s personality and age. Avoid dramatic openings that feel forced. Instead, use words that feel like normal speech in the moment.

    Practice Helps With Delivery

Even the strongest opening needs practice. Preparing the voice, steady, calm, and practicing breathing helps actors deliver a clear and confident opening. Performance quality depends on physical readiness. For example, a study from the American College of Sports Medicine showed that dehydration resulting in a loss of as little as 2% of body mass can be associated with a decline in physical performance.
Good hydration and focus help actors speak clearly. Another study conducted by researchers from the Department of Physiology of the Australian Institute of Sport found that low fluid intake in cyclers resulted in a relative performance impairment of 28.6%.

This proves that preparation supports both physical and emotional performance.
